Skanska – the company’s history, values and projects

Today, we are recognised as one of the world’s leading construction companies. This would not have been possible without our long history and extensive experience. With the help of new technologies and innovations, we are constantly changing the way we plan our work and carry out projects. At Skanska, we are guided by principles and values aimed at building a better society and creating welcoming places to live. Our goal is to create a space you will call home!

Tradition and history

In a rapidly changing world, every company must find a way to adapt to the market and respond efficiently and effectively to customers’ needs. We have this perfectly under control – thanks to our nearly 150 years of experience.

1887 and the early days of Skanska

Skanska’s history dates back to 1887 – that was when Aktiebolaget Skånska Cementgjuteriet was founded by Rudolf Fredrik Berg. Although we initially focused on the production of concrete elements, we eventually entered the construction market for good. Ten years later, we were awarded our first overseas project.

Skanska in the 20th century

In the mid-1950s, we began operating in foreign markets – South America, Africa and Asia. In 1965, our company was listed on the Stockholm Stock Exchange, and in 1971, we entered the US market. In 1984, Skanska became our official name. In the 1990s, we embarked on a period of expansion.

Skanska Developer – now

Our headquarters are in Stockholm. We have more than 41,000 employees worldwide, and our revenue for 2023 was approximately SEK 157.1 billion. Our business focuses on the construction and development of residential, office and infrastructure projects in selected markets in Europe and the Americas.

Our portfolio includes projects such as the Gherkin in London and the Oculus in New York, as well as renovations of the Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridges.

Skanska’s completed projects and current projects

We have been building high-quality residential estates and houses in Poland for more than twenty years. Our best-known projects include Rynek Łazarski in Poznań, Centrum Południe in Wrocław and Park Ostrobramska in Warsaw. However, we also draw on our experience in designing and building housing estates and houses in countries such as Sweden, Norway, Finland, the United Kingdom and the Czech Republic.

Skanska’s environmentally friendly projects

In line with our philosophy, we focus on environmentally friendly construction. We take care to ensure a balance between residential spaces and green spaces, as well as the careful design of communal areas for residents.

At Skanska, it is the residents’ comfort that matters

We pay particular attention to designing spaces free from architectural barriers. Independent certificates attest to the quality of our projects, confirming that we do everything we can to ensure the highest levels of safety and comfort for residents.

Skanska in Poland

Skanska’s presence in Poland dates back to the early 1970s. It was then that our first modern hotels in the country were built: the Forum and the Victoria in Warsaw. Office projects followed. Among the most modern contemporary projects are P180 and Studio B in Warsaw

or Nowy Rynek in Poznań. We also develop innovative and sustainable residential estates, such as Solen Kabaty and Holm House in Warsaw, or Hemma Orawska in Kraków.

Values

We operate in accordance with the principle of sustainable development. We are a market leader in Poland in the field of so-called green construction. Ethics and health and safety form the basis of everything we do. The values we uphold reflect who we are, how we act and what we believe in.

We care about life and the environment

We work safely or not at all. The health and well-being of our employees are important to us. When we build, we promote green, environmentally friendly solutions and conduct our business in a way that is in harmony with nature.

We care about a better tomorrow

We feel a sense of responsibility towards future generations. We promote a culture of inclusion; we welcome feedback and suggestions from customers and contractors – we gather their views through surveys so that we can subsequently incorporate the findings into our project delivery. We conduct our business with the utmost transparency. By showing trust and respect for one another, together we build the Skanska brand. And we are proud of it.

We are a socially responsible developer

Construction security is our top priority. We finance projects using our own funds, and we hold our customers’ money in transparent escrow accounts. We provide convenient support throughout the flat-buying process, and our team remains at your disposal even after you have purchased your home.

Skanska awards and honours

Our housing estates are appreciated not only by residents but also by the professional community. We have received numerous awards for people- and nature-friendly solutions, as well as for high-quality architecture.

Awards for Skanska’s residential developments

We have won, amongst others, the Architectural Award from the Mayor of Warsaw, the ‘Rzeczpospolita’ Green Eagle, the ‘Polityka’ CSR Leaves and the PLGBC Green Building Awards. In addition, we were a winner in the ‘Accessibility Leader’ Architectural and Urban Design Competition.

At Skanska, we take an interest in the state of the property development market

We are a member of the Polish Association of Real Estate Developers – an industry organisation that has been working to improve the state of the property development sector in Poland for 20 years. The organisation has already brought together more than 300 developers from across the country, who adhere to the Code of Good Practice and are committed to sustainable development.
